Church

The Church of St Nicholas was the second purpose built Greek Orthodox Church in England. George Michael Papayiannis, the first President of the Liverpool Greek Community organised the loan to fund the construction of the Church. Mr Papayiannis, who was also the founder of the great navigational company Ellerman, played an instrumental part in integrating the Greek community within Liverpool. The Church was finally built in 1870 and was proudly dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of families, children and seamen. The Church of St. Nicholas has now become a focal point of the community and is much admired by for its stunning architecture as a Grade II listed building.
